Chinese Crocodile Lizard

Shinisaurus crocodilurus

Overview

Defined by rows of bony scales that mimic a crocodile, the Chinese Crocodile Lizard is a rare, semiaquatic reptile. These lizards typically measure 40 to 46 cm in length and feature green bodies with reddish necks, often marked by alternating light and dark bands. While they are not venomous, they are powerful sit-and-wait predators. They perch on overhanging branches or vegetation near water, lunging at insects, snails, tadpoles, and small fish. To establish dominance in their territory, they may swing their tails or gape their mouths at rivals.

Native to southeastern China and northeastern Vietnam, these lizards live in cool, monsoonal climates. They prefer remote, undisturbed habitats such as mountain ridges and dense, subtropical broadleaf evergreen forests. Most individuals are found near clear, shallow streams at elevations between 200 and 1,500 meters above sea level. They are secretive animals that rarely venture onto the forest floor, opting instead to shelter inside tree holes, under rocks, or on vegetated perches.

Populations are currently threatened by severe habitat loss and fragmentation. Logging, mining, and dam construction have altered the water flow of their essential streams, while local tourism and farming cause further pollution. Additionally, poachers hunt them for meat, traditional medicine, and the international pet trade. Because they are slow to mature, reaching reproductive age only by three years, they are particularly vulnerable to these pressures. Every spring, females give birth to between 2 and 12 fully developed young that must survive independently from birth.

These are open occurrence records, so they show where people looked for and recorded the Chinese Crocodile Lizard as much as where it lives. Cells are up to 25 km across, and every location is generalised to its cell.
