Tufted Ground Squirrel

Rheithrosciurus macrotis

Overview

Native only to Borneo, the Tufted Ground Squirrel is a distinctive rodent that inhabits the forest floor and lower canopy. This animal is typically found on hillsides within lowland primary forests at elevations below 1,100 metres. While it has been spotted in orchards or secondary forests, such sightings are infrequent. This squirrel weighs between 1 and 2 kg and grows to a head and body length of roughly 335 to 352 mm. Its most striking feature is a massive, grizzled charcoal tail with white frosting that rises in a plume. This tail is so voluminous that it represents 130 percent of the volume of the squirrel's body, which is the largest known ratio for any mammal. Scientists believe this plume might distract predators or serve as a tool for communication.

Travellers may recognise the Tufted Ground Squirrel by its reddish-brown back and the white or yellow stripes running along its flanks. Its ears are notably hairy, featuring large tufts that range from red to dark brown. Though it is active during the day, the species is considered wary and hard to observe. Its confirmed diet consists of seeds, fruits, insects, and canarium tree nuts. Local legends among Dayak hunters suggest a more predatory nature, claiming the squirrel kills deer to eat their internal organs, though scientists have only filmed it foraging for more conventional food. The species faces significant pressure from the loss of its habitat through deforestation. While it is fully protected in the state of Sarawak, hunting remains legal with a licence in Sabah. Additionally, some local people hunt the squirrel to use its tail as decoration for knife hilts.
