African Striped Weasel

Poecilogale albinucha

Overview

One of the smallest carnivorans on the continent, the African Striped Weasel is a long, slender mammal with short legs and a white, bushy tail. Its fur is primarily black, but it is easily identified by four white or pale yellow bands that run from the crown of its head down its back. This species lives across sub-Saharan Africa, from Kenya south to South Africa. While it is most frequently found in grasslands and savannas containing termite mounds, it also inhabits rainforests, fynbos, and agricultural land.

These weasels are specialized predators that hunt rodents and occasionally birds, often entering burrows to find prey. During a hunt, they typically bite the back of the neck while they roll around and kick the prey's back to dislocate its spine. Mostly solitary and active at night, they are skilled diggers that excavate their own burrows. They rarely drink water, instead obtaining moisture from their food. Breeding occurs between spring and late summer, with females typically giving birth to litters of two or three young.

Although they have no major known threats, these animals are frequently used in traditional medicine. They are also sometimes killed by domestic dogs, owls, or vehicles on roads. When confronted, they may growl, make fake charges, or spray a pungent fluid from their scent glands, though they usually prefer to flee into a hole.
