Christy's Water Cobra

Naja christyi

Overview

The Christy's Water Cobra is a heavy-bodied snake found in the Republic of Congo, the western Democratic Republic of Congo, and small parts of Gabon and Angola. These snakes typically measure 1.1 metres in length, though some individuals reach 2.3 metres. They are blackish brown with shiny scales and a head that is distinct from the neck. On the front third of the body, they display irregular cross bars of black and pale brown, which form rings around the neck.

Living in wet forested areas and lowland woods, this species stays close to the banks of streams, rivers, and lakes. It is a semi-aquatic animal and an excellent swimmer that remains in the water for long periods. When not swimming, it hides under tree roots, inside holes, or among rocks. It also uses man-made jetties and bridges for cover. While active during both day and night, the snake is generally not aggressive. If it encounters a person while in the water, it usually swims away quickly.

This snake hunts a variety of prey including fish, amphibians, rodents, and small lizards. When it feels threatened on land, it will hiss, lift its body, and spread a narrow hood. Although it is an egg-laying species, its specific breeding habits remain unknown. Because it has a small geographic range, its survival is tied to these specific river habitats. Currently, there is no specific antivenom made for its neurotoxic bite, which is among the most potent of any African cobra.
