Bog Turtle

Glyptemys muhlenbergii

Overview

Recognized as the smallest turtle in North America, this species measures about 10 centimeters when fully grown and weighs an average of 110 grams. It is identified by a dark brown or black head featuring a bright orange, yellow, or red spot on each side of the neck. The rectangular, domed shell is typically dark brown or black, sometimes showing a chestnut sunburst pattern on the scales. Its skin is similarly dark, occasionally displaying an orange-red wash on the inner legs.

Native only to the eastern United States, the Bog Turtle lives in scattered colonies from Vermont to Georgia. It prefers open, sunny wetlands such as fens, marshes, and meadows that contain both wet and dry regions. These habitats are characterized by soft, deep mud and a high water table. During the day, these secretive creatures bask in the sun to regulate their metabolism or bury themselves in the mud to hide. They are omnivorous, consuming berries, seeds, and aquatic plants alongside a primary diet of invertebrates like insects, snails, and slugs.

Survival is difficult for this species due to a low reproduction rate, with females laying only one clutch of approximately three eggs per year. Urban development and the construction of roads have destroyed much of their habitat and blocked movement between wetlands. Invasive plants like purple loosestrife also threaten them by growing thick enough to hinder movement and out-compete native food sources. Additionally, they face pressure from the illegal pet trade and various predators, including foxes and raccoons.

These are open occurrence records, so they show where people looked for and recorded the Bog Turtle as much as where it lives. Cells are up to 25 km across, and every location is generalised to its cell.
