Anhinga anhinga

Overview

Tortuguero and Arenal are the two atlas parks where the Anhinga is recorded, and its records concentrate most in the United States, Mexico, Costa Rica, Brazil and Belize. The atlas holds about 1.1 million open records of the bird from nine countries. Because the map shows where these records gather, it represents a partial view of the range.

Seasons for the bird differ by region, and each place page shows the months it was recorded there.

These are open occurrence records, so they show where people looked for and recorded the Anhinga as much as where it lives. The atlas keeps a species' 200 best-recorded grid cells, so the map shows where records concentrate rather than its whole range. Cells are up to 25 km across, and every location is generalised to its cell.

Where you'll find them

Generalised encounter areas, not exact locations. Each shape is a grid cell coloured by how likely the species is there.
